Power Meter of the ChampionsGerman-based Schoberer Rad Messtechnik (SRM) invented and patented the very first mobile power diagnostics meter for cycling. The SRM power meter is arguably the most advanced and accurate power training tool available. Hisorically, SRM was the power meter of choice for the likes of Lance Armstrong and Jan Ullrich. Today, it is clearly the power meter of choice for top-level UCI pro teams. Professional triathletes like 2004 and 2006 Ironman Hawaii winner, Norm Stadler, and 2005 Ironman Hawaii winner, Faris Al-Sultan, both rely on an SRM for their training.
The SRM power meter consists of crankset, chainrings, and computer. The measuring unit is located between the crank arm and the chainrings and is made of a high-strength, specially tempered aluminum alloy. It is, in essence, a computer-designed torque transducer industrially manufactured to highly precise standards. Strain gauge strips are attached to the inside of the power meter and these deflect when force is applied to the pedals. The material deflection registers the force thus created (torque) by the cadence. These parameters are converted into a digital electrical signal that is transmitted telemetrically to a sensor on the frame of the bike. The power measurement is reactionless so no energy is lost by the rider.
