Colnago. The very name evokes excitement and passion. For many, Colnago is the first and last name in cycling the same way Ferrari is the first and last name in motorsports. The simile doesn’t stop there: Ernest Colnago and Enzo Ferrari (now deceased) were close acquaintances who shared fervent passions for their chosen sports and who, each in their own way, contributed sheer brilliance to their respective endeavors making them unparalleled innovators and bigger-than-life personalities. In addition to this, technological innovations developed by Ferrari in conjunction with ATR composites found their way to Colnago’s carbon framesets.
Never settled with the status quo, the company's founder, Ernesto Colnago, has always tenaciously driven the company forward thereby keeping it at the vanguard of design. In fact, it was Colnago who, despite making the world's finest steel racing frames, pushed the envelope by experimenting with carbon. Through their joint efforts with the Italian carbon composites firm, ATR Group, Colnago has led the cycling industry by manufacturing the highest quality carbon frames available--a claim which is backed up by the International Organization for Standards, or ISO. Colnago was the first and is still one of the only bicycle frame manufacturers to receive ISO 9001 certification.
While Colnago clearly lives in the present tense--perhaps even a bit in the future tense!--one cannot speak the name without conjuring up images of a glorious cyclist past. Colnago is the winningest frame manufacturer in the history of the sport. Nearly every great professional cyclist has at some point in his career thrown a leg over one of these fabled machines, including Mottet, Magni, Merckx, and Oscar Freire. Colnagos have won every major professional cycling event, and is one of a handful of brands to have conquered the elusive world hour record.
