F1 Technology For Cycling

If you are absolutely fanatical about time trialing or triathlon, and if you have the discretionary funds to fuel your passion for the sport, and if you hurry, you can be one of only 80 individuals world-wide who will own arguably the most technologically advanced frameset every produced.

The original Time Machines--as ridden by Floyd Landis in the decisive 2006 Tour de France time trials--were engineered in conjunction with Birkenstock, Switzerland, manufacturer of super high-end composites for the cycling and automotive industries. Today each TT01 is made as part of BMC's innovative Personal-Precision-Program which, similar to how Cyfac makes their frames, is a custom approach to perfectly building "sur mesure," bespoke frames for a select handful of clients. Like a finely made suit, the Personal-Precision-Program ensures that your custom TT01 will fit you like a glove and thereby optimize your performance in the most critical of all cycling events, the time trial.

The TT01 has a number of brilliantly innovative features to help it remain nearly invisible to the wind. For instance, the integrated headtube and fork system (or, Aero Hinge) eliminates the need for a steerer tube by ingeniously hinging the fork into an extremely narrow, tear-drop shaped headtube. Frontal area--hence, drag--is thereby dramatically reduced. Additionally, a Down Fin where the down tube interfaces with the bottom bracket allows for the continuation of a very narrow, wind-cheating down tube without widening at the bottom bracket. Instead, a narrow bottom bracket shell is slipped through the down tube, maintaining a dearth material, thereby keeping weight and drag to a refined minimum. The end result is the lightest TT frame in the world. In fact, reports from Switzerland indicate that a recent TT01 frameset came in at 800 grams!

When we met up with BMC at Interbike in 2005 we asked them just how far they planned on taking the Personal-Precision-Program. Could they, for instance, build custom SLC01s or other custom high-end bikes? Their answer was cryptic, but the intention seemed to indicate that this is precisely the direction BMC is heading. We later sat down for dinner with Andy Kessler, the GM of BMC, whereupon he confirmed BMC's commitment to pursuing the option of bespoke BMC frames proudly bearing the "Made in Switzerland" badge. These frames will be designed in conjunction with a team of ergonomists to optimize their owners' positioning for power, comfort, and performance.
